What are the Effects of Tooth Loss?
Tooth loss has several serious effects. Losing even one tooth is a big deal, even if it is not noticeable when you smile. Tooth loss makes simple tasks like eating and speaking more challenging. Food can get lodged in the gap, increasing your risk for gum disease and tooth decay
of surrounding teeth. Healthy teeth can begin to shift out of alignment, throwing off your bite. Moreover, if you do lose a tooth from a visible location, it can significantly affect the quality of your smile as well as your confidence.
What is a Bridge?
A dental bridge is a dental restoration that is used to replace one to three missing teeth.
While there are a few different types of bridges, but the most common is a fixed bridge. This type of bridge consists of two ceramic crowns with the pontic, or fake, tooth set between them. The crowns
are used to anchor the bridge securely in place, cemented on the adjacent healthy teeth.
Placing a dental bridge takes two separate appointments. Your first appointment is dedicated to preparing the adjacent teeth and taking impressions. Preparing the teeth, called the abutment teeth, involves removing a portion of the enamel from each one. This is done to create space for the bridge so that it will fit perfectly in with the rest of your teeth. After the teeth are prepared, an impression of your mouth is taken. This impression is sent to our dental lab, where the bridge is designed and created.
Because it can take up to two weeks for the bridge to be finished and sent back from the lab, a temporary restoration is placed. This helps to protect the prepared teeth and your oral health, as well as restore some normal function to your mouth. Once the bridge has been returned, you will come back for your second appointment. At this appointment, we check your bridge for proper fit and any necessary adjustments are made.
When the bridge looks good and feels comfortable, we use a special dental adhesive to cement the restoration into place. The functions of your mouth and the aesthetics of your smile are instantly restored.
Benefits of a Bridge
Bridges offer several benefits.
||The restoration restores the functions to your missing teeth. This includes your abilities to bite and chew, as well as the ability to control airflow properly for speech.
||Your oral health is improved. Filling in the gaps prevents food and bacteria from getting stuck. The bridge also makes your mouth easier to keep clean.
||Improved nutrition. With your chewing ability restored, you can thoroughly break down the foods you eat, which then allows your body to more easily absorb nutrients.
||Your smile, and your confidence, are restored.
