Composite (Tooth Colored) Fillings

Teeth with silver colored filling for Dr. Myers, Austin Dentist to educate patients on Tooth Colored Teeth Fillings. For over a hundred years, silver (amalgam) fillings were the only way to repair a tooth with a cavity. Then, in the 1970s, dentists began to use tooth-colored fillings, also known as composite resins. Composite resin is a mixture of small glass and plastic particles that looks natural and can be color matched to the existing shade of your tooth. In fact, tooth colored fillings offer some advantages over silver fillings. At Dr. Myers, we prefer to use tooth-colored fillings because the procedure is simple, the aesthetics are unmatched, and they demonstrate excellent longevity.

How Are Tooth Colored Fillings Placed?

Composite resin fillings are usually placed in a single appointment. Before the procedure, we will choose the shade of composite resin that best matches your tooth. Next, Dr. Myers will remove the decayed tooth material using a specialized tool. Then, the area will be cleaned, rinsed, and thoroughly dried. The composite resin is applied to the cavity in a series of layers. Each layer is intermittently hardened using a curing light. This expedites and aids in the bonding process. Once the cavity is filled, we will trim any excess material, and polish it to improve esthetics. Your filling will be almost impossible to distinguish from the rest of your tooth.

Advantages of Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored fillings have several advantages over amalgam fillings, some of which include:
•  Esthetics—Composite resin can be color matched to the rest of your tooth. Many patients choose composite resin for teeth in the visible portion of their smile. Composite resin can also be used to improve the esthetics of chipped teeth.
•  Conservation—Because composite resin directly bonds to the tooth, we remove less enamel to place the filling. Conserving more of your natural tooth prevents structural issues in later years.
•  Longevity—Composite resin is durable and resistant to wear. Under the right care, many tooth colored fillings last for upwards of eight years. Recent advancements in materials have led to improved durability.
•  Strength—The bonding process improves the strength of a tooth. Over time, other restoration materials can affect the structural integrity of a tooth.
•  Easy repairs— If chipped or damaged, a composite resin filling can be easily repaired.

Caring for Your Tooth Colored Filling

Tooth-colored fillings are relatively easy to maintain. To keep your filling bright, beautiful, and strong, you must practice proper oral hygiene. Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste and soft-bristled toothbrush. Flossing at least once a day is also a crucial part of your oral hygiene. For extra protection, use an antibacterial mouthwash during your hygiene routine. Regular checkups and cleanings will help us monitor your oral health, and help you maintain a pristine smile.

Your diet can also affect the success of your filling. To reduce your chances of further decay, limit your consumption of sugar-rich snacks and sodas. To avoid staining, limit your consumption of coffee, teas, wines, and dark fruits and vegetables.

Patient Testimonials.

Our patients come back to us because we truly care about the care you receieve. Here are some of the things our amazing patients have to say about us:
The staff are super friendly and made me feel really comfortable. I had to get Implants for two "baby" teeth i still had left b/c i never grew permanent teeth in their place. I had to be sedated for the operation and expected to be out of commission for a couples days and in a lot of pain the following week. However, that evening I felt surprisingly good with minimal pain.

Dr. Myers is the best. I have been a patient of his for about 5 years and every time I come he makes me feel super relaxed and at ease. I have had everything from a simple cleaning to crowns and everything is virtually painless afterwards. I would recommend him to any person who is seeking a great dentist and staff.
